Common sign policy

Policy regarding signs on the Lunenburg Common

The objectives for the placement of signs on the Common are based on the following criteria.

Signs and their placement need to:

~ show honor and respect for memorial monuments,
Many members of our community, members of their families, as well as visitors to our town, are either veterans or they deeply respect the sacrifices made by veterans. Having our memorials unobstructed is one way of demonstrating our community’s desire and commitment to honor and respect all veterans.

~ address need for photographic quality for families and visitors wishing to document special moments here,

Our Common in visited by hundreds of people each year. Photographs are often taken by visitors and community members. Having the unobstructed wide-angle view of the whole Common is attractive to and appreciated by these photographers

~ provide year-round usage of the Common,

Our Common is used for community gatherings, seasonal events, photo shoots, weddings, and student activities during all seasons

~ and be mindful of its value as a historic landscape.

The Common contains many historical elements, including monuments memorializing over a century of conflicts and community buildings erected in the mid-1800s.

Policy:

No commercial or political sign allowed on the Common except during vendor events.

Some of our community events have a provision for local businesses, political candidates, and members of Congress to have a space to interface with the community. In this context, they are encouraged to display informational signs within their space.

Signs advertising community events will be allowed after contacting* the Top of the Common Committee.
